Vipps Checkout closes on 30 April 2027 – what your webshop needs to do

Ovanap Team6 min read

If your webshop uses Vipps Checkout, the ready-made checkout where the customer enters their address, picks delivery and pays inside Vipps, you have to switch checkout before 30 April 2027. That is the day Vipps MobilePay Checkout closes. Ordinary Vipps payment in a webshop carries on, so most shops need to change the checkout itself, not stop offering Vipps. This guide is for you if you own the shop and want to know what is happening, what you can choose and what has to be tested before the date.

What closes, and what carries on

Vipps is the mobile payment app most people in Norway use. In March 2026 Vipps MobilePay sold its checkout product to the Swedish company Kustom, formerly known as Klarna Checkout. Vipps MobilePay Checkout becomes Kustom Checkout, and the old Vipps checkout closes on 30 April 2027. After that date, shops that have not switched can no longer take payments through it.

Only the complete checkout has been sold. Vipps MobilePay says it is continuing with its ordinary payment options for webshops. If Vipps is one of several payment choices in a normal checkout, this date does not apply to you.

Kustom also mentions a later transition for Vipps Express checkout and recurring payments. It is not clear whether that applies to shops that use these outside Checkout. If you use them, ask Vipps directly and get the answer in writing.

How to tell if your shop uses Vipps Checkout

Go through a purchase yourself, ideally on your phone. If you reach a page where the whole checkout belongs to Vipps, with address, delivery and payment in one place, you are using Vipps Checkout. If you see your usual checkout with Vipps as one choice next to card or Klarna, you are not.

You can also look in the Vipps settings in your webshop. Since May 2026 the Vipps extension for WooCommerce shows a notice about the sale to Kustom, and Checkout can only be used by shops that already had it. If you are unsure, send a screenshot of your checkout to whoever set up the shop.

The dates you need to know

The timeline below comes from Kustom’s and Vipps MobilePay’s own pages. Only one date asks anything of you: 30 April 2027.

According to Kustom you do not need to sign a new agreement, and the prices in your agreement carry over. One thing changes: payments are processed by Stripe, and you have to accept that during the transition. Kustom says shops will be guided through their own process, but the deadline does not move because you are waiting for it.

Vipps MobilePay Checkout closes

The move from Vipps Checkout to Kustom, as Vipps MobilePay and Kustom describe it.

Three ways forward

Kustom Checkout is the closest replacement: one checkout with Vipps, card and Klarna. In WooCommerce it is a separate extension, and delivery has to be set up again in Kustom’s own settings. It suits you if you like the customer doing everything in one place.

The second choice is your webshop’s own checkout, with Vipps as a payment option. The customer enters their address and picks delivery in your shop, then pays with Vipps, card or Klarna. The Vipps payment stays with Vipps MobilePay. It suits you if you want fewer links between you and your money.

The third is a different checkout product. There are several. What matters is that it supports Vipps, your delivery options and the connection to your accounting.

There is no single right answer. What decides it is how your delivery is set up, whether you sell to businesses on invoice, and which payment options your customers actually use today.

What has to be set up again when the checkout changes

Delivery is the biggest part. Vipps Checkout handled delivery options and pick-up points. In a new checkout the delivery options have to be set up again and tested with real postcodes, including for customers far away.

Then comes everything that hangs off the checkout: the order confirmation the customer receives, the terms that are shown, the connection to Tripletex or Fiken (the accounting systems many Norwegian businesses use), and how sales are measured in Google Analytics or your ad account. The payment method often gets a new name, and then the accounting connection needs to know where the new payments should be recorded.

Do not run the old and the new checkout side by side without testing. Vipps has itself changed its extension to stop the two from clashing.

What we have learned from checkout switches we have done

In a webshop we look after, there was a delivery price in the shop that looked unnecessary next to Kustom’s own delivery settings. It was what made the checkout show the delivery choice at all. Had it been tidied away, customers could not have picked delivery. So we never remove anything from a checkout until we have tested a purchase without it.

In another shop the checkout had to be moved from Klarna’s old addresses to Kustom’s new ones. Kustom’s dashboard warned about it, and the warning stayed for a while after everything had been switched. The server was also running an older software version than our tools showed, so we checked that the new checkout extension could handle it before we updated. In the same place we found an old test copy of the shop with real payment settings, which at worst could have taken real payments. We look for copies like that before every checkout switch.

  • Confirm which checkout the shop uses today
  • Write down delivery options, pick-up points and payment options
  • Set up the new checkout on a test copy of the shop
  • Test purchases with real postcodes, on a phone too
  • Check that the order reaches accounting and your sales measurement
  • Switch on a quiet day and follow the first orders

When to start, and what decides the work

Start before Christmas. Few people want to change checkout in the middle of the busy season, and many shops will be doing this at the same time over the winter. A simple shop with few delivery options is done quickly. A shop with many delivery agreements, business customers or its own changes to the checkout needs more.

What decides the work: how many delivery options and pick-up points you have, whether you have business customers on invoice or subscriptions, how much the checkout has been customised, and how old the shop is. Older shops often need updating before the new checkout can be installed.

Have ready: logins for the webshop, the Vipps portal and Kustom, a list of your delivery agreements, and the name of whoever set up the accounting connection.

If the shop is simple and you know the settings, you can follow Kustom’s guide yourself. If you have your own changes or several delivery agreements, it is safer to test on a copy first. It is a common job within webshops, and we can do the move for you. If the checkout fails completely, see when the WooCommerce checkout is not working.

Want to see what your checkout shows today? The webshop check shows, among other things, whether the shop appears to use Vipps Checkout and which payment options customers see.

This guide belongs to Webshops: WooCommerce or Shopify, with payment, shipping, stock and accounts working together.
